ప్రపంచ భాషల్లో తెలుగు సైతం అత్యంత ప్రాచీనమైనది. తెలుగు కేవలం భాషకే పరిమితం కాకుండా దానికో సంస్కృతి, కట్టుబాటు, వ్యవహారిక సరళి ఉంది. ఈ క్రమంలోనే తెలుగు భాష ప్రాచీనతను, విశిష్టతను మరింతగా చాటిచెప్పేందుకు బృహత్తర అవకాశాన్ని కేంద్రం ఇచ్చింది. తెలుగు భాషకు విశిష్ట భాష హోదా కల్పించింది. ఇంత వరకూ బాగానే ఉంది, మన రాష్ట్రంలో తెలుగు భాషాభివృద్ధికి ముందు పెద్ద ఎత్తున కృషి జరగాల్సి ఉంది. ఆ ప్రయత్నం జరగకుండా మనం ఎన్ని గంతులు వేసినా అనుకున్న ఫలితాలను సాధించలేం. తెలుగు భాషాభివృద్ధికి పాలనాపరమైన యంత్రాంగం, మంత్రాంగం ఉండాలి. తమిళనాడు , కర్ణాటక రాష్ట్రాల్లో మాదిరి మనకూ తెలుగు భాష అమలుకు మంత్రిత్వశాఖ ఏర్పాటు కావాలి. భాషకు సంబంధించి ఏ విధమైన చర్చ వచ్చినా దాని గురించి పట్టించుకునే అధికారగణం, మంత్రులు, యంత్రాంగం అక్కడ ఉంది, అదే ఆంధ్ర ప్రదేశ్ విషయానికి వచ్చే సరికి అలాంటి వ్యవస్థ లేకపోవడం తెలుగుభాషాభివృద్ధికి పెద్ద లోటు.
తెలుగు భాషపై మనకున్న ప్రేమ ఏమిటో, తెలుగుభాషకు మనం చూపుతున్న అభిమానం ఏమిటో, సర్కారుకు ఉన్న చిత్తశుద్ధి ఏమిటో మన చుట్టూ తెలుగు అమలును చూస్తే ఇట్టే అర్ధం అయిపోతుంది. ఏకత్వంలో భిన్నత్వం అనే భారతీయ సూత్రీకరణకు భాషే మూలమైనా, భాషా ప్రయుక్త రాష్ట్రాల్లో తొలుత ఏర్పడింది ఆంధ్రప్రదేశే అయినా ఇక్కడ భాష మాత్రం ఒయాసిస్సుగా మారిపోయింది. ఇటు చదువుల్లో కాని, అటు పాలనలో కాని, పాఠ్యగ్రంథాలలో కాని తెలుగు క్షీణిస్తోంది. తెలుగు వికాసానికి ఏర్పాటు చేసిన సంస్థలు ఆ పని తప్ప మిగిలిన పనులన్నీ చేస్తున్నాయి. అంతర్జాతీయ తెలుగు కేంద్రం, తెలుగు విశ్వవిద్యాలయం, తెలుగు అకాడమి, అధికార భాషా సంఘం పేర్లతో సంస్థలు వెలసినా, పదవులు పంపకాలు జరిగినా, ఆ సంస్థలు సాధించింది శూన్యం. ఇంట్లో ఈగల మోత, బయట పల్లకీ మోత అన్నట్టు తెలుగు గురించి అంతా ఇటాలియన్ ఆఫ్ ది ఈస్టు లాంటి గొప్పమాటలతో పొగిడినా, రాష్ట్రంలో మాత్రం తెలుగు పరిస్థితి రోజురోజుకూ కుంగిపోతోంది. ఒక విధంగా చెప్పాలంటే రాష్ట్ర ప్రభుత్వం తెలుగు భాష అమలును గాలికొదిలేసి గురివింద గింజ సామెత మాదిరి వ్యవహరిస్తోంది. రాష్ట్రంలో ఒకటో తరగతి నుండి స్నాతకోత్తర పట్టా (పిజి) వరకూ తెలుగు లేకుండానే చదువులు పూర్తి చేస్తున్న పరిస్థితులు దాపురించాయి. రాష్ట్రంలో ఏర్పాటైన ఇతర విద్యాబోర్డుల విద్యాసంస్థలు తెలుగును ఉపసంహరిస్తున్నాయి. పదో తరగతి వరకూ తెలుగులు తప్పనిసరిచేసిన జీవో.నెం. 86/2003ను సరిగా అమలుచేయడం లేదు. అదే మిగిలిన రాష్ట్రాల్లో ఇంజనీరింగ్, ఎంబిఎ, ఎంసిఎ వంటి వృత్తివిద్యా కోర్సుల్లో సైతం ఆయా మాతృభాషలను నిర్బంధం చేశారు. మలేషియా, సింగపూర్, బాలే ద్వీపకల్పంలో తెలుగు కేంద్రాలను ఏర్పాటు చేస్తామంటూ ఎగురుతున్న తెలుగు విశ్వవిద్యాలయం రాష్ట్రంలో తెలుగుభాష వాడుకను ప్రోత్సహించడంలో విఫలమైంది. మొత్తం మీద తెలుగును ప్రధమ భాషగా అమలు చేయడంలో ప్రభుత్వం ఘోరంగా విఫలమవుతోంది. తెలుగు విశిష్టతనూ గొప్పతనాన్ని గురించి తరచూ మాట్లాడే నేతలు సైతం అసలు తెలుగు భాష అమలుపైనా, తెలుగు భాష అధ్యయనంపైనా దృష్టి పెట్టకపోవడం గమనార్హం.
తెలుగుభాషాభిమానులే పూనుకుని ముందుకు వచ్చి అత్యాధునిక శాస్త్ర సాంకేతిక రంగాల్లోనూ తెలుగు భాష ఉనికిని కాపాడుకునేందుకు ఆధునిక సాంకేతిక భాషగా తెలుగును చేర్చేందుకు బృహత్తర బాధ్యతను తీసుకుని నాలుగు నెలల్లో విశేష కృషి జరిపి విజయం సాధించారు. రాష్ట్ర సమాచార సాంకేతిక మంత్రిత్వ శాఖ ఇందుకు అవసరమైన నిధులను సైతం విడుదల చేసింది. అంతర్జాలంలో తెలుగుభాషాభివృద్ధికి అడుగు ముందుకు వేశాం. ఇలా ఎంత జరిగినా ప్రభుత్వానికి చిత్తశుద్ధి లేకుండా ఏ కార్యక్రమం కూడా ఎన్ని శివపూజలు చేసినా ఫలితాన్నివ్వవు. చదువుల్లో తెలుగు సున్నా మన రాష్ట్రంలోనూ పిజి స్థాయి వరకూ తెలుగు భాషను ఒక పేపర్‌గా నిర్బంధంగా అమలుచేయాలని అంతా కోరుతున్నారు. సొంత భాషపై వల్లమాలిన అభిమానం ఉండాల్సిన చోట అందుకు విరుద్ధంగా ఇంగ్లీషు ఇతర విదేశీ భాషలను ప్రోత్సహించడం తప్పితే తెలుగుకు ప్రాధాన్యత ఇవ్వడం లేదనే ఆవేదన అందరిలో వ్యక్తమవుతోంది. ఇతర రాష్ట్రాల్లో తప్పనిసరి ఆయా ప్రాంతీయ భాషలో ఒక పేపర్ అయినా రాయాల్సి ఉంది. కనీసం తెలుగుకు విశిష్ట భాష హోదా లభించిన తర్వాత అయినా, రాష్ట్రంలో ఎల్‌కెజి నుండి పిజి స్థాయి వరకూ తెలుగును నిర్బంధంగా అందరూ అభ్యసించేలా ఒక బోధనా అంశంగానైనా చేర్చాలనే డిమాండ్ సర్వత్రా వినిపిస్తోంది. తెలుగు భాషాభివృద్ధికి ఏర్పాటు చేసిన తెలుగు యూనివర్శిటీలో నిన్నటి వరకూ తెలుగుభాషపై పిజి కోర్సు లేనే లేదు.
అటకెక్కిన అధికార భాషా సంఘం
చదువుల్లో తెలుగు లేకున్నా, కనీసం పాలనలోనైనా తెలుగును చేర్చేందుకు అమలులోకి తెచ్చిన అధికార భాషా సంఘం అటకెక్కింది. తెలుగు అధికార భాషగా ఉండేలా 1966లోనే చట్టం తెచ్చినా, ఫలితం లేకపోయింది. ప్రస్తుతం అధ్యక్షుడితో సహా కమిటీ లేకుండానే అధికార భాషా సంఘం నడుస్తోంది.
పాఠ్యపుస్తకాలకే పరిమితమైన అకాడమి
తెలుగు భాషాభివృద్ధికి ఏర్పాటు చేసిన మరో సంస్థ తెలుగు అకాడమి కేవలం కొన్ని పాఠ్య పుస్తకాలను ముద్రించడానికే పరిమితమైంది తప్ప తెలుగు సాహిత్యం, సంస్కృతి, వికాసానికి, సామాజిక పరిణామాక్రమానికి ఆధారమైన గ్రంథాలను ఒక్కటంటే ఒక్కటీ సొంతంగా ప్రచురించిన బాధ్యతను స్వీకరించలేకపోయింది. గతంలో ఈ సంస్థ కొన్ని గ్రంథాలను ముద్రించినా, నేడు పుస్తకాల అమ్మకాలకే పరిమితం అయింది. అక్కడా దానిని ఎదగకుండా అధికారులు గండికొట్టే ప్రయత్నాలు చేస్తూనే ఉన్నారు. అమ్మవారి పుస్తక ప్రసాదం పేరిట తిరుమల తిరుపతి దేవస్థానం ఇచ్చే ఏడు కోట్ల రూపాయిలు తెలుగు అకాడమికి రాకుండా ఇంటర్మీడియట్ డైరెక్టరేట్ అధికారులు తాత్సారం చేయడం గమనార్హం. ఇపుడు డబ్బులిస్తే పుస్తకాలు ఎలా ఇస్తారు అంటూ సందేహాలు వ్యక్తం చేసి, నిధులకు గండి కొట్టడంపై ఆందోళన వ్యక్తమవుతోంది. రాష్ట్ర ప్రభుత్వం ఇవ్వదు, ఇచ్చేవారి నుండి తీసుకోనివ్వదు అంటూ తెలుగు అకాడమి సిబ్బంది ఆవేదనగా చెబుతున్నారు. విశిష్ట భాషా కేంద్రంపైనా తాత్సారం
ప్రాచీన భాషగా తెలుగును కేంద్ర ప్రభుత్వం గుర్తించింది మొదలు అందుకు సంబంధించిన కేంద్రాన్ని రాష్ట్రంలోనే ఏర్పాటు చేయాలని ముఖ్యమంత్రి స్థాయిలోనూ ప్రతి రోజూ కేంద్ర ప్రభుత్వాన్ని కోరుతునే ఉన్నారు. నిజానికి కేంద్ర ప్రభుత్వం ఈ కేంద్రాన్ని మీ రాష్ట్రంలోనే ఏర్పాటు చేసుకోండి మహాప్రభూ అంటుంటే దానిని వినకుండా రాష్ట్ర ప్రభుత్వం మాత్రం తనదైన శైలిలో కేంద్రానికి లేఖలు రాస్తూ గడిపేస్తోంది. నిజానికి విశిష్ట భాషా కేంద్రాన్ని ఏర్పాటు చేయాలంటే కనీసం 20 ఎకరాల స్థలాన్ని ఇతర వౌలిక సదుపాయాలను కల్పించేందుకు తాము సిద్ధంగా ఉన్నట్టు రాష్ట్ర ప్రభుత్వం ఒక హామీ పత్రం ఇవ్వాల్సి ఉంటుంది. ఈ హామీని వీలున్నంత తొందరగా ఇస్తే దానిని పార్లమెంటరీ కమిటీ ముందు ఉంచి తెలుగుకు విశిష్ట భాష హోదా కల్పించే ప్రక్రియను పూర్తి చేస్తామని కేంద్ర ప్రభుత్వం స్పష్టం చేయడంతో పాటు అందుకు సంబంధించి పాలనాపరమైన సహకారాన్ని అందించేందుకు మైసూరులోని ప్రాంతీయ భారతీయ భాషల సంస్థ అధికారిని పంపించారు. ప్రతి రోజూ ఆయన హైదరాబాద్‌లో అధికారులు అందరి చుట్టూ తిరిగినా ఫలితం లేకపోయింది. హామీ పత్రాన్ని రాష్ట్ర ప్రభుత్వం సకాలంలో ఇవ్వకపోవడంతో చివరికి మైసూరు వెళ్లి లాంఛనంగా అక్కడ ఈ కేంద్రాన్ని ప్రారంభించడంతో రాష్ట్ర ప్రభుత్వం ఉలిక్కి పడింది. తక్షణమే తెలుగు భాషా విశిష్ట కేంద్రాన్ని పొట్టి శ్రీరాములు తెలుగు యూనివర్శిటీలో ప్రారంభించాలని కోరుతూ ముఖ్యమంత్రి కేంద్రానికి లేఖ రాశారు. ఇప్పటికైనా రాష్ట్ర ప్రభుత్వం ఈ కేంద్రం ఏర్పాటుకు స్థలాన్ని కేటాయిస్తే దానిని ఆంధ్ర ప్రదేశ్‌కు తరలిస్తామని కేంద్రం చెబుతోంది. ఈ వ్యవహారంలోనూ తాత్సారానికి తెలుగుభాషకు మంత్రిత్వశాఖ లేకపోవడమే కారణం

భారతదేశంలోనే ఉండిపోయిన వారికన్నా ప్రవాస భారతీయులలోనే భారతీయ సంస్కృతిపైనా, మాతృభాషపైనా మమకారమెక్కువనీ, వారే

సంస్కృతీ, సంప్రదాయాలను నిలబెడుతున్నారనీ, తెలుగు భాషను పరిరక్షిస్తున్నారనీ ఒక వాదం తరచు వినిపిస్తూ ఉంటుంది. ప్రవాస

భారతీయులంటే ముందుగా గుర్తువచ్చేది అమెరికా వాస్తవ్యులు. యల్లాప్రగడ సుబ్బారావుగారి వంటి మహామహులను వదిలేస్తే అమెరికాకు

భారతీయులు వెళ్ళడం ఆరంభమైంది 1970లలో, 1980, 90లలో ఎక్కువ. ఈ శతాబ్దిలో సామాన్యమైపోయింది. అక్కడ జరిగే సభల

గురించీ, నిర్వహించే తెలుగు తరగతుల గురించీ వార్తాపత్రికలలో చదువుతూ ఉంటాం.

ఇక్కడ ఒక సందేహం కలుగుతుంది. అమెరికాకు వలస వెళ్ళినవారి పిల్లలలో ఎందరికి తెలుగు స్వచ్ఛంగా, అమెరికా యాస లేకుండా

మాట్లాడడం వచ్చును? 1970లలో వెళ్ళిన వారి మూడవ తరానికి తెలుగుతో పరిచయమైనా ఉందా? రాజకీయ, ఆర్థిక కారణాలవల్ల

అమెరికాకు వలసలు ఆగిపోతే (ఆగిపోయే ప్రమాదం లేకపోలేదు. ఇప్పటికే ప్రవాసులవల్ల ఉద్యోగాలు రావడం లేదన్న అసంతృప్తి అమెరికావారిలో

జోహారు. ఎక్కడున్నా, ఎప్పుడైనా తమ భాషను పరిరక్షించుకోగలరు). అటువంటి వ్యతిరేక పరిస్థితులలో కూడా నాలుగు తరాలు గడిచినా

తెలుగు భాషతో అనుబంధాన్ని మారిషస్ తెలుగు వారు తెంచుకోకుండా ఉండడం ప్రశంసనీయం కదా!

మారిషస్ దేశంలో తెలుగు భాషకున్న మంచి స్థానం గురించి తెలుసుకుంటే ఆశ్చర్యానందాలు కలుగుతాయి. అక్కడ మొత్తం తెలుగువారి సంఖ్య

అరవైవేలు మాత్రమే. అయితే ప్రతి ఊరిలోనూ ఆంధ్ర మహాసభ శాఖ ఉన్నది. (ఆంధ్ర మన్నది తెలుగుకి పర్యాయపదంగా వాడబడుతున్నది

తప్ప తెలుగు నాటిలోని ఒక్క ప్రాంతానికి పరిమితం కాదు. క్రీడాభిరామంలో ఆంధ్ర నగరమన్నమాట ఓరుగల్లు లేదా వరంగల్లు గురించి కవి

ప్రయోగించారు). ఆంధ్రమహాసభ శాఖలు 95 కాగా, ముఖ్యమైనది దేశరాజధాని పోర్ట్ లూరుూలో ఉంది. మద్రాసు రాష్ట్రం నుంచి వేర్పడి

ఆంధ్ర రాష్ట్రం ఏర్పడడానికై ప్రాణాలర్పించిన పొట్టిశ్రీరాములుగారి విగ్రహాన్ని వారు ప్రతిష్ఠించుకున్నారు. భారతదేశంలో ప్రత్యేక రాష్ట్రం ఏర్పాటువల్ల

అక్కడ తెలుగువారికి ఒరిగిందేమీ లేదు. మాతృరాష్ట్రంతో బంధాన్ని ఎన్నో దశాబ్దాలుగా దూరంగా ఉన్నా తెంచుకోలేదన్నదానికి ఇది ఉదాహరణ.

ప్రతి ప్రాథమిక, ఉన్నత పాఠశాలల్లో, కళాశాలల్లో తెలుగు నేర్చుకునే సదుపాయముంది. ఆంగ్లేయుల ఏలుబడిలో కూడా విద్యార్థులకు ఆంగ్లం

ప్రథమ భాషగా, ఫ్రెంచి ద్వితీయ భాషగా, మాతృభాష మూడవభాషగా నేర్పేవారు. నేడూ అంతే. మాతృభాష నేర్వకుండా పట్టాలు

సంపాదించడం భారత దేశంలోవలె సాధ్యం కాదు. అరవైవేల మంది తెలుగువారికి 145 మంది ప్రాథమిక పాఠశాలలో, 67 మంది ఉన్నత

పాఠశాలలో, 9 మంది కళాశాలలో ఉన్నారు. దామాషా పద్ధతిన చూస్తే ఇక్కడ ఎందరు తెలుగు బోధన చెయ్యాల్సి వస్తుంది? ఇతర రాష్ట్రాలలో

తెలుగువారికి తెలుగు నేర్చుకునే అవకాశాలు ఎన్ని ఉన్నాయి?

విద్యాలయాలలో నేర్చుకునే తెలుగుకి తోడుగా ఆంధ్ర మహాసభలో కూడా నేర్చుకునే అవకాశముంది. కర్ణాటక సంగీతం, కూచిపూడి నాట్యం

నేర్పిస్తారు. ముగ్గులు వెయ్యడం కూడా నేర్చుకోవచ్చు. మారిషస్‌లో ముగ్గులు మగవాళ్ళే వేస్తారు! కళా సాంస్కృతిక మంత్రాలయ

(ప్రభుత్వశాఖ) నిర్వాహకులు నాటిక పోటీలు నిర్వహిస్తారు. స్థానిక రచయితలూ, నటీనటులూ పాల్గొంటారు.

ప్రతిరోజూ ఆకాశవాణి (రేడియో)లో మూడుగంటలు తెలుగు కార్యక్రమాలు ప్రసారవౌతాయి. అక్కడ దూరదర్శన్‌లో వారానికి రెండు

ధారావాహికలు, మాసానికి రెండు చలనచిత్రాలూ, ఇంకా ఇతర కార్యక్రమాలూ ఉంటాయి. మన దేశంలో తెలుగువారు ఎక్కువగా ఉన్న

తమిళనాడు, కర్ణాటక రాష్ట్రాలలో కూడా తెలుగు కార్యక్రమాలు ఇంతగా ప్రసారం కాకపోవడం శోచనీయం కాదా?

ప్రథమావిభక్తి ప్రత్యయాలైన డు, ము, వు, లు పుస్తకాలకే మనమిక్కడ పరిమితం చేశాం. రాముడు, కృష్ణుడు వంటి పేర్లు ముందు

తరాలలోనే వదిలేశాం. మారిషస్‌లో తెలుగు సాహిత్యంలో, భాషాభివృద్ధిలో విశేష కృషి చేస్తున్న ముఖ్యులలో ఒకరిపేరు సంజీవ

నరసింహఅప్పడు. ఇటువంటి తెలుగు ప్రత్యయాలతో అంతమయ్యే పేర్లక్కడ సామాన్యం. తెలుగు సంస్కృతీ, సంప్రదాయాలను వారు

నాలుగైదు తరాలు గడిచినా మరిచిపోలేదన్నదానికి ఇది ఒక ఉదాహరణ. నూటయాభై సంవత్సరాలు మాతృ రాష్ట్రానికి దూరంగా నివసిస్తున్నా

మాతృభూమితో ప్రత్యక్ష సంబంధానికి అవకాశం లేకపోయినా భారత సంప్రదాయాలనూ, మాతృభాషనూ విస్మరించకుండా రక్షించుకుంటూ

ఉండడానికి కారణమేమిటి? ప్రస్తుతం అమెరికాకు వెళ్ళేవారంతా (కొందరిని మినహాయిస్తే) డాలర్ల వ్యామోహంతో, భోగ భూమిపై ఆశతో,

మంది మనస్తత్వంతో వెళ్ళేవారే. మారిషస్‌కి వెళ్ళినవారు అలా వెళ్ళినవారు కాదు. 19వ శతాబ్ది ఆరంభం వరకూ మారిషస్ చెరుకు తోటలలో

నల్లవారు బానిసలుగా పనిచేసేవారు. బ్రిటిష్ ప్రభుత్వం బానిస విధానాన్ని రద్దు చేసింది. తోటలలో పని చెయ్యడానికి కార్మికులు

అవసరమయ్యారు. అప్పుడు మనదేశం పరాయి పాలనలో మగ్గిపోతున్నది. ఆ సమయంలోనే భయంకర క్షామం సంభవించింది. (ఆ కరువే

ఆర్థర్ కాటన్ మనస్సులో గోదావరిపై ఆనకట్ట కట్టాలన్న బీజం వేసింది). తప్పనిసరైన పరిస్థితులలో తెలుగు నాటిలోని వేర్వేరు ప్రాంతాలలోని

కార్మికులు వ్యవసాయ పరికరాలతో ఓడ ప్రయాణం చేసి మారిషస్ చేరుకున్నారు. తెలుగువారు దిగిన రేపుపట్టణం కొరింగ.

కోపంవచ్చినప్పుడూ, వెక్కిరించడానికీ తెలుగువారిని ఇతరులు కొరింగీలంటారు. (మద్రాసులో తెలుగువారిని గొల్టీలంటారు. ఈమాట ఉత్పత్తి

తెలియదు). వ్యవసాయ పరికరాలతోపాటు సాహితీ వ్యవసాయ పరికరాలైన భారత, రామాయణ, భాగవతాలూ, వేమన శతకం, నరసింహ

శతకం, ఎడ్లరామదాసు శతకం వంటి ఎన్నో గ్రంథాలను తమవెంట తీసికెళ్ళారు. ఇష్టపడి ధనవ్యామోహంతో వెళ్ళడం వేరు. కష్ట పరిస్థితులలో

జీవనోపాధికై వెళ్ళడం వేరు. అలా వెళ్ళిన వారికే ఎన్ని తరాలు గడిచినా మాతృభాషాభిమానం, మాతృదేశ సంస్కృతిపై గౌరవం తగ్గిపోవేమో.

ఇదే విషయాన్ని మనం ఫిజీద్వీపాలలో, సూరినాందేశంలో గమనించవచ్చు. శివరాత్రికి కాలి చెప్పులైనా లేకుండా కావిడిలో అభిషేకజలం

మోసుకెళ్ళడాన్ని కూడా చూడవచ్చును. ఎటొచ్చీ అభివృద్ధి చెందిన ధనిక దేశాలు కావు కనుక వీరు ప్రచారం చేసుకోలేరు.

మారిషస్‌లో తెలుగు ప్రైవేటు చానెళ్ళు ప్రసారం కావు. ఎంగిలి మంగలమైన ఇంగ్లీషు ను తప్పులు తడకలుగా గుప్పిస్తూ సంకర టింగ్లీషుని

కాకుండా స్వచ్ఛమైన తెలుగు మారిషస్ వాస్తవ్యులు మాట్లాడుతారు. ఇలా మాట్లాడడానికి ఇదే ముఖ్య కారణం. కుల, ప్రాంత భేదాలతో వేరు

కుంపట్లు పెట్టుకోకుండా అందరూ తెలుగువారమనుకోడం అన్నిటికన్నా ముఖ్య కారణం.

What's wrong with eating too full?

Don't overeat and don't encourage your family members and friends to
overeat - unless you wish to shorten their healthy living and perhaps die
younger!

An interesting article about eating too full....

In Today's Dr Lee Newsletter Issue:

"What's wrong with eating too full?"

"The more you eat, the sooner you die. The lesser you eat, the longer you
live." This is what Dr Lee always says in his health talks. He also
mentions, "Eating too full causes all sort of health problems such as
hypertension, diabetes, stroke, etc."

Why eating too full is so harmful to your health? What can you do about it?

Mice experiment

To see how eating habit affects life span, a professor from University of
Texas did an experiment on mice.

For the first group of 100 mice, he let them eat without any restriction,
just like a buffet meal.

The second group was fed only 60% full. And the third group was given food
without restriction too. But this time, he reduced protein content to
half. After 2.5 years, guess how many mice were still alive out of 100?

First group (eat without restriction) - only 13 mice was alive.
Opsss...
Second group (eat 60% full) - 97 mice was still alive. Only 3 mice
died.
Third group (eat without restriction with protein cut half) - 50 mice
still alive.

What can we learn from these results?

Firstly, eating too full is really harmful to your body. Secondly, eat 60%
full if you want to live longer and healthier. Thirdly, taking too much
protein is harmful to your body too. We don't need so much protein after
all.

Overworking body

Imagine having a small family car. Instead of using it for short travel
between home and office,you use it for long distance travel between
different cities every day. Instead of using it 1 hour a day, you use it
for 10 hours a day. Instead of driving at 70 km/h, you always speed up to
170 km/h, hitting engine's red line.

Can you estimate your car life span? Do you expect having various
problemswith your car after a short time? Driving your car at high speed
for a long time is like always eating too full. You force your body to
always work at its red line.

Do you know digestion is the most demanding work for your body? Think
about the organs involved such as your mouth, stomach, liver, pancreas,
duodenum and intestine. Think about the length of digestive tract from
your mouth to intestine.

By eating too full, your body zaps up much of your energy for digestion.
Otherwise, this energy may be used for other purpose such as enhancing
your immune system.

Do you realize you become very tired easily after a big meal? That is the
sign of your body working hard to digest all the food you take in.

If you eat an extra bowl of noodle, your pancreas has to produce extra
insulin hormone to process the extra carbohydrates you take.

Your liver, stomach and intestine also have to produce extra enzymes to
digest and process specific nutrients from that bowl of
noodle.

Therefore the more you eat, the harder your body has to work to process
it. Of course, we must eat to survive. But we don't have to eat that
much!

If you drive your car slowly and handle it gently, you can use it for
along time. But if you always floor the accelerator and drive like a rally
driver, you know the consequence on your car life span.

Side effect of eating

Your car engine burns fuel to move your car and bring you to anywhere you
like to go. As a result, the engine produces exhaust smoke which is toxic.
It must be dispersed out from your car.

Similarly, your body cell burns nutrient for energy to survive. In the
process, it produces free radicals. Since free radical is toxic to
yourbody, it has to be neutralized and expelled.

"Just metabolizing food especially fatty and carbohydrate- rich fare causes
the body to produce free radicals, which attack cells and can promote the
development of chronic conditions including heart disease, diabetes and
cancer," says Ronald L. Prior, Ph.D.

Of course, your body can control free radicals in small quantity. But the
more you eat, the more free radicals your body produces. Without adequate
control, these free radicals easily attack your body cells and eventually
cause all sort of diseases.
Good eating habit

After knowing the harmful effect of eating too full, what's your choice?
Do you want to live longer, just like the second group of mice in the
experiment? Or do you want to risk ending your life earlier, just like the
first group of mice? If you wish to live longer, here are some tips you
can follow:

1. Always eat until 70% full. Do not exceed 80% full. You may want to stop
eating when you feel slightly full.

2. Avoid having buffet style meal which makes it harder to control how
much you eat. Instead, prepare the food you want to eat in a plate.
After finishing it, don't add anymore food.

3. Leaving the dining table earlier may prevent you from picking some
extra food to eat.

4. It is always a good idea to prepare lesser food in the first place.
Some people are afraid of having not enough food for everyone. Actually,
lesser food is beneficial for everyone.

In a restaurant, order in small amount first. You can always add in some
extra order if necessary. But if you can get by with the original
smaller order, that's great.

Remember this:You have higher chance of overeating if you serve more
food on the table.

You have better chance of not overeating if you serve less food.

5. Avoid stuffing your fridge with ice cream, chocolate or other dessert.
You cannot eat what you do not have.

6. When someone prepares a big plate of food for you, look at it first.
Ask yourself, "Do I want to stuff it all into my stomach?"

If your answer is no, just put aside some food to another empty plate
first. After finishing your food, look back at the extra food on that
new plate. Say to yourself, "Phew! Luckily I didn't stuff that portion
into my
stomach."
7. When you get too hungry before your meal time, just take some fruit
instead of heavy meal.

The tendency to overeat is very high for modern
people.

Do you know most monks only eat twice a day?

They wake up at 4am, meditate and say their prayers. Later they have their
simple breakfast at 7am. Before 12pm, they have their lunch. That's all
for them. They eat no more after that. No tea break. No dinner. No supper.
They still look strong and energetic.

Of course, we don't have to eat like them. But it reminds us we can eat
less and stay healthy. So remember to eat only 70% full if you want to
stay healthy.

Sri Bala Balaji Devasthanam

It is Located at a distance of 70 Km from Kakinada (Via Yanam & Bodasakurru), 110 Km (Via Ravulapalem from Kakinada), 85 Km from Rajahmundry and 35 Km from Amalapuram (Via Ambajipeta) 13 Km (Via Bodasakurru Ferry) from Amalapuram. Appanapalli, a remote village in Mamidikuduru Mandal of East Godavari District, situated on the holy banks of river Vynateya has attained reputation as second Tirupathi of Konaseema being the abode of Lord Bala Balaji.

Surrounded by river Godavari on three sides and the Bay of Bengal on 4th side, flanked by wide spread paddy fields, coconut gardens, plain Mango and Jack trees konaseema appears as a part of heaven came down to earth. The village Appanapalli derived its name after a Rushi called "Appana" who did THAPASSU for the good of the world. This place in olden days was famous for well-read Brahmins in Vedas who used to spend their time in reciting hymns and performing sacrifices as ordained in the scriptures.

Little wonder there fore if Appanapalli has established itself as a Center of unfailing cultural heritage of our mother land.

The founder of the present Bala Balaji Devasthanam is Sri Molleti Ramaswamy an ardent devotee of the Lord of the Seven hills. One night he saw in his dream the Lord ordering him to go ahead with his SAMKALPA of building a temple for the Lord at Appanapalli without coming to Tirupathi with the share of profit in his business for the Lord annually. Accordingly Sri Ramaswamy at once installed the photos of Sri Sri Sri Venkateswaraswamy varu and his consort Padmavathi Ammavaru in his coconut shop in 1966. In course of time pilgrims in thousands started pouring in and Appanapalli occupied a place of devotional importance in the pilgrim map of our state. It is indeed a point of great surprise and beyond any body's comprehension to explain how the devotee Ramaswamy could serve free meal to one and all including Milk to infants besides Medical aid. "It is all His will". Who am i to claim the credit?. Ramaswamy used to say to the enquiries of the devotees.

On 18th March 1970, Ekadasi Wednesday at 10.10 A.M. the foundation stone for the construction of the New Temple was laid by Sri Ramaswamy amidst the chanting of Mantras by the Vedic Scholars. On 4.7.1991 the New Temple was completed. Strictly in accordance with the Panchahnica Agama Sastra in which, His Holiness Sri Sri Sri Tridandi Srimanarayana China Jeeyar Swamy varu installed the idols of the Lord and his consort. The annual Brahmotsavam of Swamy varu will be celebrated most piously from Jyesta Sudda Dasami to Jyesta Sudda Chaturdasi during which devotional discourses and pouranic programmes will be held.

Even though Appanapalli is a village, every care is being taken by temple authorities to provide maximum facilities to the devotees visiting the the Lord every day. Well-built bathing ghats, separate rooms for ladies for changing their dresses after the holy dip, adequate toilet facilities etc have been provided.

To-day Appanapalli has become a second Tirupathi attracting pilgrims from all parts of our Country. The income derived from various sources like Arjita sevas, sale of human hair, hundi and sale of grass by auction etc will be utilized for the purpose of providing further amenities to the pilgrims.Devotees in lakhs are being expected during the ensuing pushkarams and the devasthanam has been gearing up to welcome the devotees.

PARENTS HAVE DREAMS TOO

This is about a man who tells how his booking an air ticket for his father,

his first flight, brought emotions and made him realize that how much we

all take for granted when it comes to our parents.

'My parents left for our native place on Thursday and we went to the

airport to see them off. In fact, my father had never traveled by air

before, so I just took this opportunity to make him experience the same.

In spite of being asked to book tickets by train, I got them tickets on

Lufthansa.

The moment I handed over the tickets to him, he was surprised to see that
I
had booked them by air. The excitement was very apparent on his face,

waiting for the time of travel. Just like a school boy, he was

preparing himself on that day and we all went to the airport, right from

using the trolley for his luggage, the baggage check-in and asking for

window seat and waiting restlessly for the security check-in to happen.

He was thoroughly enjoying himself and I, too, was overcome with joy

watching him experience all these things.

As they were about to go in for the security check-in, he walked up to me

with tears in his eyes and thanked me. He became very emotional and it
was
not as if I had done something great but the fact that this meant a great

deal to him. When he said thanks, I told him there was no need to thank me.

But later, thinking about the entire incident, I looked back at my life.

As a child how many dreams our parents have made come true. Without

understanding the financial situation, we ask for football, dresses, toys,

outings, etc. Irrespective of their affordability, they have satisfied to
all our needs. Did we ever think about the sacrifices they had to make to
accommodate many of our wishes?

Did we ever say thanks for all that they have done for us?

Same way, today when it comes to our children, we always think that we

should put them in a good school.

Regardless of the amount of donation, we will ensure that we will have to

give the child the best, theme parks, toys, etc. But we tend to forget

that our parents have sacrificed a lot for our sake to see us happy, so it

is our responsibility to ensure that their dreams are realized and what

they failed to see when they were young, it is our responsibility to ensure that they

experience all those and their life is complete.

Many times, when my parents had asked me some questions, I have actually

answered back without patience. When my daughter asks me something, I have

been very polite in answering. Now I realize how they would have felt at those moments.

Let us realize that old age is a second childhood and just as we take care

of our children, the same attention and same care need to be given to our

parents and elders.

Rather than my dad saying thank you to me, I would want to say sorry for

making him wait so long for this small dream. I do realize how much he

has sacrificed for my sake and I will do my best to give the best possible

attention to all their wishes. Just because they are old does not mean

that they will have to give up everything and keep sacrificing for their

grandchildren also. They have wishes, too.'

Take care of our parents. Don't take them for granted and make them

feel small and unwanted in their old age. They too have

feelings/dreams/hope/aspirations/wishes (and many broken/shattered

ones) too while sacrificing them to give us our needs and our wants.

Effective Communication

A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said: 'I am blind, please help.' There were only a few coins in the hat.

A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words.

Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, 'Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?'

1. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size.

2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person's lifetime.

3. When the person's immune system is strong the cancer cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumors.

4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has multiple nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic, environmental, food and lifestyle factors.

5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet and including supplements will strengthen the immune system.

6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow, gastro-intestinal tract etc, and can cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc.

7. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs.

8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often reduce tumor size. However prolonged use of chemotherapy and radiation do not result in more tumor destruction.

9. When the body has too much toxic burden from chemotherapy and radiation the immune system is either compromised or destroyed, hence the person can succumb to various kinds of infections and complications.

10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also cause cancer cells to spread to other sites.

11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply.

WHAT CANCER CELLS FEED ON:

a. Sugar is a cancer-feeder. By cutting off sugar it cuts off one important food supply to the cancer cells. Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal,Spoonful, etc are made with Aspartame and it is harmful. A better natural substitute would be Manuka honey or molasses but only in very small amounts. Table salt has a chemical added to make it white in colour. Better alternative is Bragg's aminos or sea salt.

b.. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk and substituting with unsweetened soy milk, cancer cells are being starved.

c. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little chicken rather than beef or pork. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all harmful, especially to people with cancer.

d. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into an alkaline environment. About 20% can be from cooked food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to cellular levels within 15 minutes t o nourish and enhance growth of healthy cells.?

To obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most vegetables including bean sprouts) and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C).

e. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high caffeine. Green tea is a better alternative and has cancer-fighting properties. Water--best to drink purified water, or filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it.

12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines become putrified and leads to more toxic buildup.

13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the body's killer cells to destroy the cancer cells.

14. Some supplements build up the immune system (IP6, Flor-ssence, Essiac, anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, EFAs etc.) to enable the body's own killer cells to destroy cancer cells.. Other supplements like vitamin E are known to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body's normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or unneeded cells.

15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor.

Anger, unforgiveness and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy life.

16. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer cells.

The Second World Telugu Conference-1981

The last Millennium’s largest Telugu gathering in Malaysia is undoubtedly the Second World Telugu Conference (SWTC), held on a grand scale in Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya from the 11th to 14th of April, 1981. This World Telugu Conference which witnessed the gathering of Telugus from various nations, is the follow-up Conference of the First World Telugu Conference, held at Hyderabad, in 1975.\\

The SWTC was organized under the patronage of the Telugu Association of Malaysia and with the full support of its Executive Committee and its branches. The chairmanship of this mammoth task was given to the then president of TAM and academician Dr Chandriah Apparao and he executed the task with the help of highly professional and well selected Organising Committee comprising of professionals, academicians, senior Government Servants and TAM officials.

The SWTC which was launched by the then Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dr. Mahathir Mohamad was attended by more than 2000 Telugu political figures, academicians, artists, poets and Telugu enthusiasts from many parts of the world namely from Malaysia, India, Singapore, Fiji, Mauritius, South Africa, United Kingdom and USA. Amongst the prominent foreign Telugus who graced the function were: the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Sri Anjayya, Education Minister Sri Krishna Rao, Cultural Minister, Sri Battam Sree Rama Murthy, Bejawada Gopala Reddy, Vavilala Gopala Krishnayya, Vempati Chinna Satyam, poets Dr.Dasarathi, Dr.C.Narayana reddy, Dr.Bapu Reddy, Ambassodor N.V.Rao, movie ace producer U.Visweswara Rao, cine artists Satyanarayana, Prabakar Reddy, Sharath Babu, Jamuna, Kanchana, Jayachitra and many others. The SWTC also witnessed the support and attendance of prominent Malaysian leaders including Works Minister Dato Seri Samy Velu, Deputy Ministers Dato K.Padmanaban, Dato S.Subramaniam, P.P. Narayanan,Toh Puan Uma Sambandhan and Tan Sri Ubaidullah. The event also witnessed the release of a souvenir program consisting of messages of the deputy Prime Minister, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Articles on Telugus, Program schedules and wishes of well-wishers. The Prime Minister of India at that time, Srmati Indira Gandhi, also sent her good wishes for the conference.

The four day function had a number of activities such as the Malaysian Night, a Telugu exhibition, Academic sessions, cultural activities and a Telugu Film Festival. A 10 day exhibition of Andhra culture, arts and crafts and history was held at the National Musuim. All art effects and material for the exhibition was brought in to Malyasia with the help of Andhra Government. The exhibition educated the thousands of visitors to the museum on the rich Telugu history, culture and its arts. The well executed exhibition was organized under the chairmanship of Mr.V.N.Ramachandran with help obtained from the then National Museum Director Mr. Sharom Yeop and Prof. Khoo Kay Kim of University Malaya. As part of the exhibition a massive structure of Kakathiya heritage depicting Telugu history was also erected at the entrance of the PJ Civic Centre, the main venue of the conference.

The Malaysian night which exhibited Malay cultural performances, Boria in Telugu by Koathala Ramunaidu and group, ‘Burra Katha’ on the history of Malaysian Telugus written by Beesetty Nokiah and performed by Apparao, Gangaraju and Maniam, Chiratalu by South Perak Telugus and other cultural performances were a welcome treat especially for foreign Telugus.

• Numerous academic sessions were held to discuss on the various aspects of Telugu language, culture, arts, history and future. These sessions were well planned and executed by the Academic Committee Chairman Dr.Ganagadaram with the help from fellow academicians Dr.Dhandayutham, Dr.Subrahmanaiam and Mr. Sharma and Mr.B.A.Dhemudu.

The evenings were filled with cultural activities mainly brought under the guidance and co-ordination of AP Ministry of Culture and its Minister Mr. Battam Sri Rama Murthy. Amongst the prominent cultural performances and crowd pullers during the SWTC were the Dr.Bala Murali Krishna’s melodious Keerthanas, Dr.Chitti Babu’s Veena recital, Vempati Chinna Satyams.s Disciples Kuchipudi dance performances, Raja Reddy Kuchipudi Dance performances and Drama and Comedy performances by movie artist. These performances were held simultaneously at PJ Civic Centre and at Jaya Puri Hotel, PJ.

The evenings also witnessed the Telugu Film Festival with the screening of award and highly acclaimed Telugu movies such as Alloori Seetha Rama Raju, Shankarabaranam, Muthyala Muggu and Bakhtha Kanappa.

During the period of the conference, Foreign Telugus had the opportunity of visiting Kuala Perak Estate, an estate filled with 100 % Telugus, to see how Telugus in Malaysia lived and how they have maintained their culture and language. Lower Perak Telugus must be appreciated for transporting them and providing them the warmth and remarkable hospitality.

The atmosphere every evening was lively with Telugu food, Telugu culture, Telugu movies and thousands of happy Telugu faces seen everywhere. That was the atmosphere unprecedented in the history of Malaysian Telugus. Will we see such an atmosphere again? I will assume this may be possible for the Golden Jubilee at Gentings.

It is also appropriate to acknowledge the efforts of numerous Telugus who have contributed to the success of the SWTC in 1981. Amongst the prominent were Dr.C.Apparao, Dr.Vijayan, Dr.Dayananda, Dr.Krishnamoorthy, Mr.Sundram, Dr.Gangadharam, Dr.Subrahmanyam, Mr.B,A,Dhemudu, Mr.Netheti Duragiah, Mr.Madhini Somu Naidu, Mr.Dhadi Sree Ramulu, Mr.Beesetti Nokiah, Mr.Parasa Ramulu, Mr.V.N.Ramachandran, Mr.Balakrishnan, Mr.R.Lechumana, Mr.Narayanasamy Reddiar, Mr.Soorinarayana, Mr.N.B.Ledchumama, Mr.Appalasamy, Mr.Ali Khan, Mr.J.S.Maniam, Mr.Konathala Ramu Naidu, Mr. Yellapu Krishnamurthy, Mr.Monday Laxmana, Mr.Gummadi Appala Naidu and the secretariat staff Miss Mallika, Miss Anjali Devi and Miss Brinda, Miss Viji, Miss Latha, Miss Siva Kumari and Miss Saro. The efforts of all the branches, their leaders and members are also to be acknowledged for making the event a great success.

One of the important objectives of the conference was to correct the prevailing misconception existing among members of the other Indian communities at that time that the Telugus were less advanced and accomplished then them.
